The Means of Psychological Treatment for Social Anxiety Disorder

Studies have already shown that social anxiety disorder is a serious psychological condition that has to be treated early in order to achieve positive effects. Sometimes most people do not know that they are already suffering from the disorder because they mistakenly think that they’re just extremely shy. Sometimes this goes untreated and can last a lifetime. Social Anxiety Disorder can get worse when untreated. People affected by the disorder can’t go perform even the most mundane public tasks let alone socialize with other people.

Psychological counseling is the initial treatment to combat social anxiety disorder. If the symptoms are quite serious, such as depression and extreme anxiety, the physician may prescribe medications such as antidepressants to reduce the occurrence of these unwanted symptoms.

If somebody fears only a few certain situations involving social interaction, such as speaking or performing in front of an audience, professional counseling may do the trick and help the person overcome the fear. However, if the person avoids all social contact and has high anxiety over this, a more effective treatment should involve both psychological counseling as well as medications to lessen the effects of social anxiety disorder, or social phobia.

When you consult your doctor, he first tries to find out whether you are generally anxious with all social situations, or whether only a few specific social encounters will trigger your anxiety. From here the health professional can then advise you on what treatment option you must take. Usually, people who have social phobia develop depression as well. This can lead to alcohol and substance abuse so its important to contact your doctor if you may suffer from this disorder.

A medical doctor may advise you to seek professional counseling in order to help you overcome this disorder. There are many types of counseling the physician may recommend, which may include but are not limited to:

Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy

The counselor will help you in identifying what your anxieties are and what the causes are that might trigger these anxieties. At first, one may seem uneasy in identifying as well as addressing the feared situations. But this is one step to the successful overcoming of the anxiety. The counselor may help you by slowly exposing you to these situations until you no longer fear them. He may also help you cope with it by role playing in order for you to develop the needed social skills when you are faced with certain social situations. The professional will also advise you on stress-controlling techniques in order to lessen them.

Supportive Therapy

The professional counselor may opt to provide a person with information about the disorder, and how to deal with it. Also, the professional might place you in a group so that each one of you can share and discuss one’s condition and give each other support so that all of you can overcome the problem. Also, family therapy is an effective way to help overcome the problem. Your loved ones may also be affected by your anxieties, so it would be best if the whole family is given a chance to share and talk about how it affects them, and how it could be overcome.
