Schizophrenia: What is it really?

Schizophrenia is a serious disorder of the brain. People who have schizophrenia have experienced progressive changes in their personality and their relationships with others, as well as their contact with the outside world beginning to break down.

Brain Disorder

In the past, people referred to schizophrenia as something that was “all in the mind,” or, said the schizophrenic’s mind might have not functioned properly. However, science and medical research have now proven that schizophrenia is a serious brain disorder. By taking detailed pictures of the brains of people with schizophrenia, scientists have discovered that there are dramatic differences when compared to normally functioning brains.

Those who suffer from schizophrenia show a lot of varied symptoms. They think in an abnormal or disorganized way, or their behavior as well as language is quite odd. They also become withdrawn from other people, and emotionally unresponsive. These types of behavior can be a source of great stress to the person himself, as well as to his family and loved ones.

Genes

Up to now, scientists haven’t still unlocked the mystery how one can get this serious brain disorder. But, researchers have discovered that genes may be one of the culprits. One is more susceptible to schizophrenia if someone in his/her family has been diagnosed with the disease, such as a parent, brother or sister, or even a relative. This is only one factor though, since scientists have hypothesized that a lot of different factors can trigger schizophrenia.

Psychological Causes

There are also other physiological and psychological factors that come into play for people having schizophrenia. Scientists have discovered that the brains of patients suffering from schizophrenia have not developed in a normal way. There are also the psychological causes, such as that of infants who have suffered birth trauma. These babies are then more likely to develop schizophrenia. Another probable factor at work is poverty. It can also trigger schizophrenia, but not all people have this. It takes a more sudden traumatic experience for this disease to be triggered, such as losing a job, moving house, as well as stress and substance abuse.

Usually, young people in their late twenties and early thirties have developed symptoms of schizophrenia. It is also more common in men than in women. This is a very serious as well as chronic disease, meaning it can cause severe damage over a long period of time. There is still no treatment that will totally cure schizophrenia. It can affect the way your brain thinks, so one’s brain may not function properly, have problems differentiating reality from fantasy, as well as find it difficult to manage emotions. Decision-making processes and social skills are also impaired.

There are some good treatments for schizophrenia, but it can never fully heal the person’s mind with the disease. There are still relapses with the patients. Other people may find that sufferers of schizophrenia are abnormal as well as dangerous, but this is not entirely true. They just need the right kind of treatment. So if you suspect that a loved one has shown symptoms of schizophrenia, you should seek professional help immediately.
