What You Should Know About Pancreatic Cancer

All cancers are deadly if not treated early. The problem with cancer of the pancreas is that it is not always easy to detect. There may be no signs of it until the condition has become serious. This disease is known for its ability to take life quickly. In some cases, a patient may die in a matter of months. What is the cause of this disease and what can be done to prevent it?The PancreasThe pancreas is a six inch organ located at the top portion of the abdomen and is a component of the digestive system. It is in front of the spine and behind the intestine and stomach. This organ makes liquid rich in enzymes that enter the small intestine through the duodenum to help digest food. Aside from this major function, the organ also produces glucagons and insulin which are crucial to the management of sugar levels in the blood.

Causes

The exact causes of cancer of the pancreas have not yet been determined. Like other forms of cancer though, specialists believe that there may be genetic factors at work. Predispositions to certain gene mutations that may have been inherited may be partly responsible. It has also been suggested that other inherited genes, predispositions and conditions such as an abnormal BRCA2 gene linked to breast cancer and a family tendency for multi mole melanoma syndrome increase a person risks of developing pancreatic cancer.

Other experts say though that lifestyle and environmental factors such as smoking and a fat rich diet carry more weight in the development of pancreatic cancer. One other major risk factor that is often stressed is excessive and frequent drinking. Such a habit may lead to inflammation of the pancreas or chronic pancreatitis which can put a person in danger of developing pancreatic cancer.

As of now, there are really no conclusive details about the causes of pancreatic cancer. It is best though to be vigilant if you are over 60, if you have had family members with the condition and if you are a chronic smoker and drinker.

Types of Pancreatic Cancer

The major type of pancreatic cancer which is also the most common among individuals with cancer of the pancreas is ductal adenocarcinoma. This type of cancer affects the ducts in the pancreas that produce digestive juices. Another pancreatic cancer type may affect the cells responsible for generating hormones. This is a rare form of cancer and may occur only in 5% of all pancreatic cancer patients.

Spread of Pancreatic Cancer

Pancreatic cancer cells have the reputation of being able to spread quickly. They may move on first to the nearest lymph nodes and organs such as the intestine, colon and bile duct. The cells may spread further to other organs like the lungs through the lymphatic system or the bloodstream.

Prevention

Since the exact causes of pancreatic cancer are hard to pinpoint, it would be best to try to avoid having the disease by controlling possible risk factors. You should stop smoking and should only drink alcohol moderately. Eating right, exercising and keeping to your ideal weight are also important.
