Cosmetic lip surgery may seem like a harmless procedure but it comes with many risks. Going into such a life-changing experience, you may as well look at these risks much like costs. After all, you are actually spending more than just your hard-earned dollar if you avail of cosmetic lip surgery.

The Tangible Cost

Of course, it goes without saying that the real cost involves the money that you will be spending when you are getting cosmetic lip surgery. There are many medicines and pre-operation as well as post-operation procedures that you will end up spending a lot of money on. This goes without saying that if you do hit a snag during the operation, you will have to spend for all the other procedures that will correct it (i.e. a botched surgery that leaves a scar on your face). As a form of plastic surgery, cosmetic lip surgery can involve the use of silicone and other necessary items such as injections and clinic facilities. All in all, the actual cost of the whole operation would probably set you back at least $5000.

The Physical Cost

More than money, you will have to do a little physical spending as well. Remember that you cannot just walk into a clinic and expect that the doctor enhance or reduce your lips immediately. Cosmetic lip surgery will require you to be at a certain health level so that you can go through the actual procedure to avoid any complications as much as possible. A surgeon or physician will most probably advise you on what kind of diet and exercise routine you should be following for a set amount of time before surgery. The other cost you have to consider is that you risk damage to your own lips. This is a risk that you must be willing to take if you really are considering cosmetic lip surgery. You basically are spending a physical amount of your skin being damaged, as it is cut and scraped for lip reduction or if fats from other parts of your body are taken and injected into your lips.

The Emotional Cost

The most important thing to consider is the emotional cost that you may be spending when it comes to cosmetic lip surgery. By going through this procedure, you are going through a life-changing experience. After the surgery, you will be transformed as a person because you will look different and may therefore act differently. Whether the change is positive or negative really depends on the results of the cosmetic lip surgery. You can probably become a better and more approachable person with your new enhanced lips. But it can also be negative if the surgery is not successful. You may lose a lot of important self-esteem and confidence and go on a downward spiral of depression. This is the emotional cost that you will be risking if you get into this and any physically transforming surgery.

Keep in mind that the costs for cosmetic lip surgery are more than just about money. Think of the risks and the many things that you will have to spend (including time) just trying to get better-looking lips.

Cosmetic lip surgery is a procedure that needs to be studied and practiced by professional surgeons. This is not your basic run-of-the-mill procedure that is used to make your lips fat or thin. There are steps and proper protocols that need to be followed before, during, and after the surgery. So you can imagine the different risks one must take when “going under the knife”. After all, depending on the procedure, “going under the knife” is actually quite literal.

Financial

First of all, it goes without saying that anybody considering cosmetic lip surgery should know the financial risk. The overall procedure can cost one up to $5000 in fees and medicines. Now that is not a figure to laugh at and if you do experience a botched surgery or if it results in a look that you don’t quite like after all, then think of the money that was lost. For anybody about to go through the procedure, think more than twice before shelling out the big bucks.

Physical

More than anything else, cosmetic lip surgery is something that will change your life forever. First and foremost, this means in the physical aspect. Those going under the knife are about to make major changes to their own physical appearance and this means that risks are quite high. Like any other form of surgery, cosmetic lip surgery can result in bleeding and later infection. Swelling is definitely something that will take place and the success of the swelling going away also has a small ratio. Those who go through with it also go through the high risk of scarring and this is something that many people tend to overlook. Imagine that the surgery ends up leaving a scar on your face. This will result in you either living with it and suffering, or you having to spend more money just to hide that scar through another plastic surgery procedure. An uncommon risk also involves the lips rejecting implants. This means that the implants must be removed because a patient will risk infection by leaving it in their lips. The same implants also tend to migrate or move so you can also expect the risk of having lips that are not properly aligned.

Emotional

Cosmetic lip surgery is mostly a vain pursuit. Most people who go through it do not even need it to begin with. They just go through it to become more beautiful and more desired in society. However, this kind of pursuit does not go without its own emotional risks. The risk is that a person will experienced a failed surgery that will leave him or her looking more undesirable than he or she originally was. This can take a large toll on someone’s emotional state and can cause many feelings of anger, frustration, depression, loss, and failure. These conditions will affect the way a person functions in life, and so a simple procedure like cosmetic lip surgery can be quite dangerous not only physically, but also psychologically. This is another aspect of the procedure that one must take into consideration before actually going through with it.

Plastic surgery is a procedure that was introduced to the medical world in the late 1980s as a means of enhancing ones looks or improving a disfiguring physical scar. Today, there are all sorts of plastic surgery procedures and most of them are cosmetic, meaning the procedures exist to help one look better. One of these procedures is known as cosmetic lip surgery. Cosmetic plastic surgery is not cheap and it’s no different for cosmetic lip surgery even if it only involves improving a small part of the body.

What Price To Expect

Cosmetic lip surgery is not an easy procedure as one may think. It does not just involve surgeon with a scalpel who will make one’s lips fat or thin to make one look better. The procedure is quite complicated and it involves many different materials and preparations and this means that there are many fees that have to be paid for by the one choosing the procedure. Lip enhancement or reduction procedures will involve fees for the procedure, the injections and the collagen that might be used for enhancements, the surgeon’s fee and sometimes a fee if there is an assistant physician or a nurse, and a fee for the use of the facilities.

The Figures

Cosmetic lip surgery, although specific and only done around a “miniscule” part of the body, is complicated. It involves many risks and that includes a failed or botched procedure; or even physical scarring on the patient’s part. So before any procedure, a patient must be aware of the risks and perhaps acquire insurance to cover it. However, beyond that insurance, a patient who is getting an enhancement will have to pay a little over $300 for collagen injections, about $1500 for lip augmentation procedures that are beyond the injection fees, a surgeons fee which is dependent on the surgeons reputation but will usually cost almost $2000, and the use of a clinic’s facilities that can reach up to $500. So for one who is planning to get lip enhancements or reductions, they can expect to pay approximately $4000.

Why Is It Expensive?

Any kind of medical and surgical procedure in the United States is expensive. Medicine alone is a price that many Americans have to prioritize because it’s expensive. Plastic surgery, on the other hand, is probably one of the most expensive surgical procedures in the world because it involves a lot of skill that demands precision and patience on the doctor’s part. It is no different for cosmetic lip surgery and there are also many anesthetic procedures that patients must go through to avoid any complications or painful moments during surgery. Overall, what one is paying for during lip surgery is the masterful skill of the surgeon who has to be educated and experienced enough to go through with the procedure successfully and without hitches. Even though the lip procedure involves a small part of one’s body, it does not mean it will be inexpensive.

In today’s medical world, there are so many marvelous things that you can do to your own body to make it feel and look better. Plastic surgery has taken the concept of shaping one’s body to levels that we never could have grasped 40 years ago. Now, we can even make specific changes to specific parts of our body like the woman’s breasts, torso and even the face. Even more specifically, there is now what is known as cosmetic lip surgery.

People do cosmetic lip surgery because it makes them feel that they look better. Then there are others who have cosmetic lip surgery to improve an abnormality that they probably once had. Whatever the reason is, people now believe that the lips are a very important facial feature. Consequently, there are now different ways to improve one’s lips, whether they are thick or thin.

Thin Lips

Nowadays, most people with thin lips wish they had lips that made them look confident and beautiful. Most women probably look up to the likes of celebrity Angelina Jolie, who seems to have naturally thick lips. But for those who do not have that natural look, cosmetic lip surgery on lip enlargement is available. It involves the use of injection therapy. A cosmetic plastic surgeon injects fat, which is taken from other parts of the body, into the lips. The results vary from person to person but the therapy does work. Another option is to have microdroplet silicone injected into the lips. This material and procedure, however, is not approved by the FDA yet. People who have tried it have experienced various results, mostly added fullness to their lips.

Thick Lips

For people with thick lips who wish their lips were thinner, there is a different type of cosmetic lip surgery procedure. It might be a little more dangerous than just injection therapy because it involves reducing the fat in the lips via reduction surgery. A cosmetic surgeon carefully places incisions on the inside of the lips and then excess tissue is scraped away. A lot of soft tissue in the lips is also removed to make the lips smaller. The surgery works but there is also the risk of minimal scarring.

Lip Lift

There are two other procedures known as lip lifts. The first involves incisions and requires the stripping of skin above the lip. Often, this procedure results in scars and it is best used on older patients who are not likely to form scars after the process. A second and more recommended procedure involves an incision made at the base of the nose, just above the upper lip. Skin is removed beneath the nose area, leaving the lip elevated. Complications of this procedure are very rare and this is probably the safest and most common lip lift known in the cosmetic lip surgery practice.

Rosacea is a skin condition that affects millions of Americans. The last time the figures were counted, there was roughly 14 million affected by the condition. Nonetheless, hundreds of sufferers still probably feel alone and isolated.

Psychological Impact

Although rosacea affects millions, it is still a highly misunderstood condition. It is probably because of its manifested symptoms that others tend to have mistaken ideas about people with rosacea. For some individuals, the condition can be so severe that they get stared at and isolated. Rosacea may not significantly damage your body but it can damage you emotionally.

Benefits of Support Groups

When rosacea begins to interrupt the way you live your life and the way you look at yourself, it is time to look for serious help. Your best step may be to go to a doctor and ask for effective treatment options. One other step that you should take though is to look for a support group. These groups can offer you benefits that you can’t get from a tube of antibiotic.

First of all, rosacea support groups are the best sources of emotional support. Of course, you can get that too from a therapist or from family members but support groups give you the feeling that you belong to a greater community where real people actually know what you are saying and feeling. It helps to know that there are those who can relate to your experiences.

Support groups also provide real accounts of experiences from people who have gone through the condition and conquered it. Other people’s stories can be sources of strength and positive thoughts.

Support groups offer real and practical advice from members on what works and what doesn’t. Although an expert doctor should still be the final authority on your treatment, group members can help with self-care tips. Group insights are also doubly valuable these days in the age of the internet. This is the time when anyone can sell books and products and claim to be able to help you. Support groups will know better and will help you keep your eyes peeled for scams.

One of the best benefits of joining a group is that you get reliable information about your condition. Navigating the internet may be tricky and your group is the key to help you get the right data about causes, symptoms and disease progression.

Some support groups have expert doctors around who help provide expert advice for rosacea sufferers.

Joining a group is the best way to keep you updated on new treatment discoveries as well as events and relevant books on rosacea.

Groups provide convenient access to important information. Most groups have a mailing list. All you have to do is to wait for the information you need to come to you.

Where to Look

The best place to conveniently look for a rosacea support group is on the internet. You simply have to browse the available groups and join the ones that you are comfortable with. It would help though to ask for recommendations from people you trust like your doctor or a family member.

Lasers are becoming more and more popular as treatment tools for a variety of conditions. One of the difficult conditions for which lasers are now used for is rosacea. Here are some answers to common questions that you should ask about rosacea laser treatment.

What is laser treatment for rosacea?

Lasers can now be used to treat the symptoms of rosacea. Lasers can be safely used to reduce the blushing effect of the condition. It is however, a treatment that is more often used for treating thickened skin, visible vessels and swelling nose that are characteristic of more advanced cases of rosacea.

How does it work?

There are different kinds of lasers that can be used for rosacea. Your doctor will pick the one that will best fit your condition. Probably the most popular type of laser is the pulsed dye laser. The light wavelengths produced by the laser are directed at the vessels on the face. This results in the elimination of the redness-causing vessels.

Other patients may have more serious conditions. They may already have swollen noses and thickened skins. In such cases, the CO2 laser is used to shape the affected area. Other lasers that can be used for rosacea are erbium YAG laser, diode laser and the KTP laser.

Can it be used with other treatments?

Doctors typically recommend that patients continue taking other rosacea medications. These may include antibiotics and topical treatments. These medications will help support the effects of laser treatment. Continued avoidance of possible triggers is also recommended.

How long will the treatment take?

The duration of a patient’s treatment will depend on the severity of his specific condition. On the average, a patient may have to go through at least three treatments spread through four months and a half. Individuals can expect to see visible results a few weeks after treatment.

Are there side effects?

Laser treatment is generally safe especially if your doctor is an expert. Minimal side effects however should still be expected. There may be some bruising that will eventually heal after more or less a week. The skin may also initially swell and become red but will return to normal after one or two days. Infections and scarring are rare but they can happen.

Can it cure rosacea?

Laser treatment may provide good results that will last for a long time but the treatment itself is not a cure for rosacea. There is no cure yet for the condition. You may have to return for more laser treatment for succeeding outbreaks. You would also have to keep on taking other prescribed treatment and self-care options.

Can anyone choose to have it?

Not everyone can be a candidate for rosacea laser treatment. Your doctor may not permit you to be treated with lasers if you are pregnant or if you have serious medical conditions like diabetes. Individuals who have tans may also not be good candidates.

All candidates for laser treatment are also supposed to have realistic expectations. Because we are all unique, the treatment may not work as well on one individual as it did on another. Skin types, conditions and individual environmental factors may influence the effectiveness of laser treatment.

Rosacea definitely will not kill you but the condition can cause you a lot of emotional distress and embarrassment. For some, the psychological impact can be damaging. Rosacea can be the reason for the loss of self-esteem and sometimes even withdrawal from society. There is currently no cure for the condition yet, but there are medicines that can help you ease the symptoms of rosacea. Here are some points for you to consider when taking medication for rosacea.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are often prescribed for rosacea to reduce inflammation. Depending on the severity of your condition, you may be asked to take only one of either topical or oral antibiotics. In a lot of cases, both types of antibiotics are recommended. Oral antibiotics tend to work more quickly than their topical counterparts because they are taken directly into the body’s system. Topical antibiotics though, boost the effects of oral antibiotics and are often best used when the condition is well under control. Examples of antibiotics for rosacea are clindamycin, erythromycin, doxycycline and minocycline.

Other Treatments

Aside from antibiotics, other topical applications or medicines may be prescribed for rosacea. Here are some possible treatment options:

Benzoyl peroxide- This is actually an antibacterial topical cream used specifically for acne. It may however, also help reduce the symptoms of rosacea. Using this medication typically results in skin dryness.

Isotretinoin- This medication is for cystic acne but it has also been used for severe cases of rosacea. It has a drying effect on the skin that can help eliminate the appearance of skin thickness common among individuals with severe symptoms. It should be noted though that this is a very strong type of medication and may have severe side effects especially for women who become pregnant during or some time after treatment.

Treatment Facts

If you are considering treatment for rosacea or are actually already under treatment, you should take note of a couple of important treatment facts:

It is reasonable to think that you may have rosacea as soon as persistent blushing occurs. If you think you have the condition, considers seeing a dermatologist as soon as possible. Rosacea is often easily treated at its early stages.

Depending on your condition, your doctor may ask you to use more than one form of medication. You may have to take both antibiotics and topical treatments. On top of these, he may also recommend self-care products like moisturizers and sunscreen.

Aside from self-care products, you may also have to learn self-care procedures. You may have to avoid certain triggers such as too much sun exposure, certain foods or beverages and some skin products.

You can’t just get rid of your symptoms immediately. You may have to wait for two months or so before you see good results. Your doctor may also recommend the maintenance of some treatment products to continuously control the symptoms.

A whopping 14 million of the American population have rosacea. Even with this number, it seems that not everyone truly knows or understands the condition. What is it exactly?

What it is

Rosacea is a skin condition that is characterized by facial redness and inflammation. In some people, the condition may spread to the eyes, neck and upper back. Because of its symptoms, the condition is often mistaken for sunburn, allergies and acne. In fact, it is often mistakenly called adult acne. Some people may also think that the condition is caused by drinking too much alcohol. These are all inaccurate beliefs about rosacea.

Some people who have the condition may have it in an on and off pattern. The condition may seem to get better and then may gradually become worse again. In others, the condition may get worse through time especially when left untreated.

Symptoms

At the beginning, individuals may notice that they tend to blush easily and frequently. In time, blushing may become more persistent and will not show signs of disappearing. In more serious cases, the blush may appear much like sunburn. In time, tiny blood vessels on the face will become more obvious to the naked eye. One other common rosacea symptom is the appearance of pimple-like bumps. Sometimes, the bumps will contain pus.

In some cases, other symptoms will appear. The nose and eyelids may swell and the person may feel a burning sensation. The eyes may also become affected by rosacea and will redden.

Causes

The exact causes of rosacea have not been determined but several theories exist. Here are some theories about what causes rosacea:

Heredity- Some say that the condition could be genetically inherited. You can test this theory by looking for family members who may have the condition.

Bacterial Infection- Helicobacter pylori actually causes infection of the intestine but it is also believed by some to be the culprit behind rosacea.

Mites- Demodex folliculorum is a type of mite that is found in the follicles of the hair. The theory is that these tiny mites clog the pores, thus inflaming the skin.

Disorder- Another theory is that the blood vessels of people with rosacea may have a disorder which makes them swell.

It is also generally believed that there are factors that can trigger the outbreak of rosacea. Different individuals may have different triggers. It would therefore be best to try to keep your own watch on possible triggers that affect you. Keep a diary of things you do and foods you eat before outbreaks happen to help you trace triggers. Possible triggers include stress, spicy meals, hot drinks, too much sun exposure and some medications like corticosteroids.

Who is Affected

Anyone can get rosacea but it has been observed that the condition more often hits light skinned adults from 30 to 60 years old. More women than men are affected by it but the men who have the condition have more obvious symptoms. The bulbous nose for example is more often more prominent in men.

Having psoriasis is no joke. Although it can’t really kill you physically, it can shake you emotionally. The sad part is that it can’t be cured completely. That doesn’t mean though that you have to spend the rest of your life hiding from the rest of the world. There are things you can do to help you live with psoriasis.

Follow Your Doctor’s Advice

The first and one of the best self-care tips ever is to meticulously follow whatever your doctor tells you to do. Although he probably can’t rid you of psoriasis forever, his recommended treatments are supposed to reduce your symptoms. Take your medication on time and only as prescribed. Never miss nor take too much.

Steer Clear of Stress

In some people, stress is a major factor that can encourage psoriasis outbreaks. It may be difficult to avoid stress entirely but you can learn to manage stress and avoid triggering your condition. One way to manage your emotional condition is to practice stress reduction methods. Try learning simple breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation. These are techniques you can use even when you are in the office. Make it a point too to occasionally take a break from the source of your usual stress. Go on relaxing vacations or weekend picnics.

Observe Other Triggers

Stress is only one of the few possible psoriasis triggers. Since individuals are unique, you might have other triggers that others don’t. Take note of what you eat or things you do before you have outbreaks and you might find the factors that trigger your condition. Common possible triggers that you should avoid are smoking, weather conditions, excessive drinking, too much sun exposure and injuries to the skin.

Eat Well and Exercise

Psoriasis outbreaks may not necessarily be triggered by the food you eat but it is still wise to keep your diet healthy. At the very least, eating a nutritious diet and exercising regularly can help your body cope with stress and fend off other possible health problems. Make sure you limit your fat intake and have more of vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Maintain a regular exercise regimen.

Take a Bath

Psoriasis patients find daily baths comforting. Instead of having just an ordinary shower, it would help if you soaked yourself in a tub of lukewarm water. You can add some bath oil or Epsom salts. This will help soothe your skin and gently remove accumulated skin. Remember too to use only mild soaps.

Use a Moisturizer

Moisturizers can protect your skin from dryness and help remove scales. Moisturizers are best used for psoriasis after a warm, relaxing bath.

Sun Exposure

You might be surprised but your doctor will probably agree that it would be good for you to get a little sunlight on your skin. You should however take care not to expose yourself too much. You could burn your skin and make your condition worse. Ask your doctor how long you are allowed to expose yourself and on what times of the day.

Most of us know what psoriasis is but not all of us are probably aware that there is a condition known as arthritic psoriasis. What is this condition and what is its relation to both psoriasis and arthritis?

Arthritic Psoriasis

Some individuals probably feel bad enough that they have either psoriasis or arthritis. It must therefore be doubly terrible to suffer from both conditions at the same time. Arthritic psoriasis is actually a condition in which individuals show both the symptoms of psoriasis and arthritis. An individual could therefore have red scaly skin patches and inflamed joints.

Both conditions do not result in immediate death but they can both be debilitating. Among many individuals, the red and silver patches of psoriasis make it difficult to appear in public without being thoroughly covered. Having arthritis makes things more difficult because it limits movement. It also causes a lot of pain and discomfort. The condition usually appears in people in their 40s and 50s. In some cases, psoriasis may develop first followed by arthritis. The second condition may follow only after a number of years have passed.

Symptoms

The common signs of psoriasis are red patches with silver skin scales in some parts of the body like elbows, knees, arms and legs. Arthritis on the other hand is marked by swollen and painful joints. Different individuals may suffer from different kinds of arthritic psoriasis. Some may only have pain on the joints of one side of the body while others may experience pain on similar joints on both sides. In rare cases, a person could have finger joints affected by arthritic psoriasis.

Two difficult forms of this disease are spondylitis and arthritis mutilans. The former is arthritic psoriasis that affects the spine and which will eventually make movement painful and labored. The pain felt could include both the back and the neck. The later is a rare form of arthritic psoriasis which destroys some of the bones in the hand.

Some individuals may additionally develop ridged nails and acne as signs of arthritic psoriasis. Sometimes, arthritic psoriasis may also affect the eyes and lungs, causing inflammation in these areas.

Causes

There is no clear definitive cause identified for arthritic psoriasis. It has been determined though that individuals who have family members with this condition have a higher risk of developing it too. It is believed that those who may have genetically inherited the condition have immune systems that inexplicably function irrationally.

Treatment

Just as there is no cure for psoriasis and arthritis, there is also no cure for the combined ailment. Inflammation and pain however may be minimized through the use of therapy and medications. Arthritis medications seem to work just as well among arthritic psoriatic patients. Common medications include NSAIDs, DMARDs, immuno-suppresants and corticosteroids.

Therapeutic techniques to relieve pain and inflammation may also be attempted with the approval of a doctor. A patient may therefore perform therapist formulated exercises that include stretching and walking. Gentle swimming and floating may also be prescribed. The water will help take off the extra weight on affected joints.
