A lot of expectant mothers simply can’t wait for the time when their babies see the light of day. More often than not though, joyful anticipation can be temporarily marred by the expectation of labor pain. How can expectant mothers deal with the pain of childbirth? Labor Pains

First of all, it is important to understand that not all women have the same kind and intensity of labor pains. It is true that for some, especially first time mothers, the pain may seem shocking and overwhelming. For others though, the pain may only be as intense as having menstrual cramps. There are also those who do not suffer from extreme pain but eventually tire out due to the extended and continual nature of labor pain.

Going to Class

Whether or not you think you will be a candidate for intense labor pains, it pays to learn as much as you can about how to deal with pain. The best solution is to enroll for pre-birth classes. You will not only learn about the methods for dealing with pain but you will also be told what to expect during labor and what is expected of you. Learning what will happen ahead of time can help ease any tension or worries you may feel over going into labor.

During class, you will also be given the chance to choose the labor pain management method that you would like to use. You should remember though that you should consult your doctor first about this. Each method has its pros and cons for you and your baby. Some methods may also not be permitted or may not be offered where you will give birth.

Methods to Relieve Pain

You are given the option of asking for pain relief medication to help you get through labor pains. Common pain medications for labor are analgesics and anesthesia. There are however, other non medication methods that you may use before or during labor.

The Lamaze method is perhaps one of the most popular ways to deal with labor pain. It usually teaches expectant mothers techniques in breathing, relaxation and distraction to reduce the sensation of pain. More importantly though, this method teaches women not to exaggerate their perception of pain and to view labor and childbirth as something that is not scary.

Relaxation techniques come in a variety of forms. Some examples are meditation, imagery and hypnosis. These techniques can either teach an expectant mother to concentrate and control the sensation of pain or to focus on something else. In any case, learning these techniques may take some time and a lot of expert guidance.

Months before you begin to experience labor pains, your doctor may recommend that you perform pregnancy exercises. The type, frequency and intensity of your exercises will depend on your condition. Sometimes the recommended exercise may be as simple as walking. Doctor recommended exercises will help you build your stamina and will prepare your muscles and body for the stretching and stress that will happen during labor.
